UU Ministry for Earth

Dear friend,

Are you familiar with this protest song?

People gonna rise like the water, gonna calm this crisis down --- I hear the voice of my great-granddaughter saying 'climate justice now'!

Well, it's already coming true. I had originally interpreted this song in terms of a hypothetical great-grandaughter 30+ years from now that I wasn't even confident I could look forward to having given the state of the climate change and ecological mass extinction crises. Now I'm starting to realize and deeply appreciate the fact that there are great-grandmothers alive right now whose great-granddaughters are out in the streets demanding climate justice and a right to a liveable future. Tens of thousands of school students have been participating in a climate strike in Belgium inspired by the powerful leadership of Greta Thunberg, and the first youth climate strike in the US is being planned for March 15, 2019.

People are definitely rising like the water right now and the great-grandchildren are obviously getting organized --- now we need to focus on manifesting the "gonna calm this crisis down" part of the song!

This will be no easy task, but it must be done. There is so much in this world worth protecting. Thank you for joining and supporting the Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth to live into this calling as a matter of Unitarian Universalist faith and moral principle.

Onward, together,
Aly Tharp
