UU Ministry for Earth

Dear Friend:

As we give thanks for bountiful harvests of the lands and seas, let us be mindful of the complexities of the American holiday. Thanksgiving Day Reconsidered asks UUs everywhere to examine its history and myths as the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower's historic landing nears. We acknowledge the suffering, indignity, and loss Indigenous peoples have suffered since, and mourn the suffering brought on by myriad environmental and climate injustices. Mobilizing ourselves in solidarity with Indigenous front-line water and land protectors helps create needed peace and reconciliation, justice and healing for the Earth and all her peoples. And, for that, we would indeed give thanks.

Why Do You Support UUMFE

Having just worked with UUMFE on our shared conference in Washington, DC, I've gained a new respect for all they do. As co-chair for UUs for a Just Economic Community, I saw partnering bring depth and completeness to our efforts for economic justice. Create Climate Justice is a frame that includes both our missions--protecting the earth while protecting jobs and a living wage. UUMFE's director, Aly Tharp, is clear sighted--she knows what needs to be done and how to do it.

Fridays for Future

#FridaysForFuture is a movement that began in August 2018, after 15 years old Greta Thunberg sat in front of the Swedish parliament every schoolday for three weeks, to protest against the lack of action on the climate crisis. Youth leaders and adult allies with Fridays for Future have been building a movement for climate action with international weekly strikes for over a year now. We have taken to the streets and grown our momentum, joining with other groups to push world leaders to the tipping point of change. Whether you are a seasoned activist or have never protested before, we need you to join a climate strike near you to demand leaders act with urgency and awareness to change our planet’s path before it is too late. Our deep strikes, days like March 15th and September 20th, have turned out millions of people for our cause. The next deep strike is coming up on November 29th, with some cities striking on December 6.

Check out the map to find one of our over 400 strikes planned around the country to join. If there isn’t one already planned in your area, we would be more than happy to help you start your own
