UU Ministry for Earth

Dear friend,

UUMFE strives to be grounded in the needs, experience, and leadership of those who are on the front lines of climate change. Right now, these are Puerto Ricans and Indigenous Peoples, and people of faith and conscience are vitally needed in the struggle. Activate, educate, inspire, and connect!

ACTIVATION

Demand that Congress Increase Aid to Puerto Rico

In the wake of utter devastation in Puerto Rico caused by Hurricane Maria, 92% of the population is still without electricity, and the death count has more than doubled. Puerto Ricans are US citizens, yet the US administration refuses to acknowledge climate change or respond appropriately to this disaster. Take action now to tell your representatives that they need to do more, donate to this grassroots community-managed recovery fund for Puerto Rico, and bear witness to front line voices.

EDUCATION

Indigenous Peoples Day Resources

Recognition of the rights and sovereignty of Indigenous Nations is fundamental to climate justice. This Monday, honor Indigenous Peoples Day by honoring this vital connection. Did you know that 80% of remaining biodiversity on the planet resides in Indigenous territories? Get more resources here, including a sermon preached by UUMFE Program Coordinator Aly Tharp last year on the connection between Indigenous rights and climate justice.

INSPIRATION

UU Young Adult Walks 300 Miles to UN Climate Talks

Yesterday Amelia Diehl, a member of UU Young Adults for Climate Justice, began a one-month, 300-mile walking journey from Paris to Bonn for the UN COP23 climate talks in mid-November. Amelia’s pilgrimage is an act of witness and also a spiritual practice, and she will be live-blogging about the experience. Once in Germany, she will be an active member of the SustainUS Youth Delegation. Get the whole story.
